Discover how to set your Instagram account to private to control who can view your post.
What to Know
- Tap your profile icon and tap Menu > Settings > Privacy. Under Account Privacy, toggle on Private Account.
- If you want your profile to be visible again, return to the Account Privacy menu and toggle off Private Account.
When you set your Instagram account to private, only your followers can see your posts, and any hashtags you use won’t show up in searches. Here’s how it works on both the Android and iOS Instagram apps.
Make Your Instagram Account Private
Making your profile private is quite simple. Here are the steps to getting it done, as explained using the Instagram iPhone app:
1.Tap the profile icon in the lower-right corner of your screen.
2.Tap the three horizontal lines at the top right of the screen.
3.Tap Settings.
4.Tap Privacy.
5.Under Account Privacy, toggle on Private Account.
NOTE:– If you don’t want to make your entire profile private, but just a few pictures, you can choose to hide select photos on your Instagram account. This option can be found in the photo menu.
Making Your Profile Public
If you reconsider and wish to make your profile public again, revisit the Account Privacy section and switch off Private Account. If you’re under 16 when you join Instagram, your profile will be automatically set to private. You’ll need to manually adjust the privacy setting to make your feed visible to everyone.

FAQ
Q1. What happens if I mention a user or use a hashtag in one of my Instagram posts while my profile is set to private? Will others still see it?
Ans. Only your followers will see it. Mentioning users who don’t follow you or using hashtags in the description won’t make the post visible to non-followers. It remains private to anyone who doesn’t already follow you.
Q2. If my Instagram profile is set to private, can I share a post on other social networks?
Ans. Yes, you can. When you share a post on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, or another social network, it will be publicly accessible as a standalone post. Clicking on the Instagram permalink will allow viewers to see the full post, but they won’t be able to view your other content unless they already follow you.
Q3. If someone follows me while my profile is private, can they see my posts?
Ans. No, they can’t see your posts until you approve their follow request. When someone tries to follow you while your profile is private, it sends a follow request message. You have to manually approve their request for them to see your content.
Q4. I have someone following me that I don’t want as a follower anymore. How do I remove them?
Ans. To stop someone from following you, block their account. Go to their profile, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, and select “Block User” to remove them from your followers. (If the account is behaving inappropriately, consider reporting it.)
